Match number: 1543 Matt Hockin fired a double salvo early in this county cup tie to secure the 'A' team's passage to the second round. On a bright sunny afternoon the Weysiders 'A' team, three divisions above their hosts in the league, started well to establish a two-goal advantage after only eight minutes of the match. The first game when Andy Horner robbed a defender and planted a through-ball into Hockin's path, and the bald striker chipped the ball comfortably home after only six minutes. Two minutes later a corner was not properly cleared and it fell to Hockin who drove the ball home from ten yards.
The young New Haw team was rocked by this poor start, but came back into the match well and started to play some good football around the park. This was backed with some tough tackling at the back, Hockin taking some punishment. After 22 minutes after the referee had spent two minutes pegging down the net, the Weysiders defence failed to regain concentration and the ball travelled across the six yard box before being put into the newly pegged net to make it 2-1.
Weysiders continued to give a poor account of themselves for the rest of the first half, but were more resilient in the second half with a five-man midfield, which countered most of New Haw's thrusts - of which there were plenty. Still it was the visitors who had the clearest chances from counter-attacks and breakaways with Hockin and Dom De Piano having the best. But the score surprisingly stayed at 2-1 to give the 'A' team another run at the cup in which they reached the semi-final last season. |
