Match number: 1529Despite the scoreline this was a game of two halves, dictated by a constant breeze blowing straight down the pitch. Our opponents from West Byfleet, another side new to the league, were young, fit but above all TALL, with at least 6 over 6 feet tall. Of the large number of Byfleet players in our club only 2 are over 6 feet tall, one being a goalkeeper and the other being one of the worst headers of the ball in the club and neither were available for the B's this Saturday! With the B's always being a short side, even when we have a full squad, it was always going to be a David versus Goliath struggle.
We won the toss and elected to play with the wind in the first half. The next 45 minutes where fairly even with the B's perhaps shading possession although in all honesty never really looking like scoring despite some good approach play involving debutant Mark Fish amongst others. Symon Hope's throw ins caused the home side some problems despite the height disadvantage but half time came with no score.
The turn round at half time saw the B's now playing into the wind and soon becoming trapped in their own half by the wind and some dominant heading by the home side. Indeed the first 2 goals were scored by headers from corners and once the third went in it was clear the B's were on their way to a second defeat of the season. As always the B's battled on but could not stop 3 more goals going in, the day being summed up by the last goal when a pump into the area caught the wind and dropped in just under the bar.
Playing in the bottom division has the disadvantage that the new sides joining the league are added to this division and some of them should be playing at a higher standard. We must take full advantage of the games against the teams left in the division from last season to ensure we can finish mid table. |
