Match number: 2492Weysiders Reserves got their season off to a good start with a hard fought 1-0 win against Milford & Witley's A team, from a division above them in the league. Despite not having a recognised centre-back pairing, the combination of new second team captain Jack Shaw and Gary Patterson looks to have the making of strong backbone upon which to build. Everyone was asked to meet at 13:00 and the majority managed to oblige, but unfortunately this week the kit was late arriving, so we were unable to sufficiently utilise the pre-match time. Going forward this is something we will be working on getting right as the season unfolds. During the pre-match team talk, the players were asked to keep their formation and to try not to wander during the game, the objective being not to concede, whilst creating chances as the game progressed. Although this was the first game of the season for Weysiders Reserves, they successfully executed this strategy for the whole game and although they only managed to score the one goal through a lucky Jack Shaw 70-yard long range free-kick, they did manage to create a number of good chances, and were unfortunate not to score more. The team was disciplined and worked hard throughout the whole game with everyone, including the substitutes, playing a part in the win. So dominant were the Reserves that Milford & Witley A did not manage a shot on target or an attacking corner during the whole game. It was a good overall team performance, but special mention must be given to Man of the Match Liam Cox who worked his socks off hassling the Milford & Witley A defence and chasing lost causes, and also Dom De Piano for playing the simple ball, which is something everyone needs to do more of. Next up are Byfleet at home in the league. Please make every effort to get to training, Thursday night on the 3G pitch at the Surrey Sports Park starting 8:30 till 9:30. |
