Match number: 2396The Reserves opened the season with a home again against Guildford Park Reserves ("Park"). It was a blisteringly hot day and water was very much in demand. Chris Lary, Marco Calicchia and Chris Murch made their debuts for Weysiders.
Weysiders started well, dominating possession, and created some good scoring chances and went deservedly ahead after ten minutes when Marco Calicchia finished off a good move.
Not long afterwards, against the run of play, Park equalised when a long ball was poorly defended. Despite Weysiders creating further chances, somehow after 37 minutes Park went
ahead due to another defensive error.
However, five minutes later Marco Calicchia scored a simple tap in to ensure the scores were level at half-time.
The second half was much more even and chances were missed at both ends including one fantastic save from Alex MacDonell. All three substitutes were used as the hard pitch and sun took its toll.
Then, with 15 minutes to go a long ball put Alex MacDonnell through and he finished sublimely to put Weysiders up again, 3-2.
Disaster struck with five minutes to go when a long hoof somehow just went over the defender's head, bounced over the keeper and was tapped in. Then, unbelievably as we moved into extra time, a dubious free kick was given to Park and an unstoppable 25 yarder was struck around the wall and into the top corner of the net.
Weysiders didn't deserve that and a 4-3 defeat was a disappointing start to the new season. The 4-5-1 formation was not effective on the day and the management have some hard thinking to do before next week's game.
